West Lake works well for longer stays, families, and anyone who's visited Hanoi before and already covered the Old Quarter's must-sees. Wider streets, more greenery, and a slower pace make it a genuinely different experience from central Hanoi — closer to how many of the city's expats and well-off locals actually live.
What to expect
- More space — hotels and serviced apartments here tend to have larger rooms than the historic tube-house buildings common in the Old Quarter.
- A short commute to the centre — expect a 15–25 minute Grab ride into the Old Quarter for most sights, rather than a walk.
- A strong food and cafe scene — West Lake has some of the city's best modern cafes and restaurants, worth exploring in its own right, not just as a base.
Is it a good choice for a first visit?
For most first-time visitors on a short trip, the Old Quarter's walkability still wins out. West Lake makes more sense for a second visit, a longer stay, or if peace and quiet in the evenings matters more to you than being a five-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake.
