The general options
- Visa exemption — citizens of a number of countries can enter Vietnam without a visa for a set period, usually for tourism purposes.
- E-visa — Vietnam's online e-visa system covers most nationalities not otherwise exempt, applied for in advance online, and is generally the simplest paid option for most travellers.
- Visa on arrival — historically required a pre-approval letter arranged in advance; largely superseded by the e-visa system for most travellers now, but still worth checking if it applies to your situation.
What to have ready on arrival
- A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date (a common requirement, though always confirm the current rule).
- A printed or digital copy of your e-visa approval, if applicable.
- Proof of onward or return travel, occasionally requested.
- Passport photos, if applying for any visa type that requires them.
Good to know: Apply for an e-visa well ahead of your trip rather than at the last minute — processing times can vary, and arriving without the correct paperwork causes real problems at the airport.
