West Lake (Hồ Tây)
At roughly six times the size of Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake is where Hanoi slows down — a loop of quiet roads, lakeside cafes, and some of the city's oldest pagodas.

Why visit
If the Old Quarter feels intense, West Lake (Hồ Tây) is the antidote — wider roads, tree-lined paths, and a much slower pace. It's popular with Hanoi's expat community and increasingly with well-heeled locals, which means good cafes, restaurants and a handful of boutique shops.
What to see
- Tran Quoc Pagoda — Vietnam's oldest Buddhist pagoda, dating back roughly 1,500 years, set on a small peninsula jutting into the lake. Best at sunrise or sunset.
- Quan Thanh Temple — a Taoist temple near the lake's southern edge, quieter and less visited.
- Lakeside cafes — the western and northern shores are lined with cafes that make a good stop for an afternoon coffee with a view.
How to get around it
The full loop is too long to comfortably walk. Renting a bicycle or an electric bike, or simply taking a Grab to a specific spot (rather than trying to see it all), works better for most visitors.
Good to know: West Lake is a good half-day add-on once you've covered the Old Quarter and central sights — not usually a first stop for a short trip.
