Vietnam Museum of Ethnology
Widely considered one of Vietnam's best museums, this is where to go for real context on the country's ethnic diversity — well beyond what a few days in Hanoi alone can show you.
What's inside
The indoor museum presents Vietnam's 54 officially recognised ethnic groups through clothing, tools, religious objects and detailed explanatory displays — genuinely well curated and captioned in English, which isn't always guaranteed at museums in the region.
The outdoor architecture park
Just as compelling as the indoor exhibits: a landscaped outdoor area with full-scale reconstructions of traditional houses from different ethnic groups, including a tall Bahnar communal house and a Cham compound. It's worth allowing time to actually walk through and enter these structures, not just view them from outside.
Is it worth the distance?
The museum sits outside the central area, a 20–30 minute drive from the Old Quarter — further than most other sights on this list. It's genuinely worth the trip if you have the time, particularly if you're also planning to visit Sapa or Ha Giang and want context on the ethnic minority communities you'll encounter there.
