The Ha Giang Loop
Widely regarded as Vietnam's most spectacular road trip, the Ha Giang Loop winds through dramatic limestone mountains near the Chinese border — but it's a serious multi-day trip, not a quick add-on.
What it is
The Ha Giang Loop is a multi-day motorbike route through Ha Giang province in Vietnam's far north — a region of dramatic karst mountains, hairpin passes (including the famous Ma Pi Leng Pass), and ethnic minority villages. It's become one of the most talked-about experiences in Vietnam for independent travellers.
Getting to Ha Giang from Hanoi
Ha Giang city itself is about 6 hours from Hanoi by bus — most people take an overnight or early sleeper bus, then start the loop from there (rented motorbikes and gear are widely available in Ha Giang city).
Self-drive or easy rider?
- Self-drive — you ride your own rented motorbike. Only sensible if you're already a confident rider; mountain roads here are unforgiving of inexperience.
- Easy rider (pillion) — you ride as a passenger behind an experienced local driver, usually arranged in a small group tour. A safer and increasingly popular option for non-riders who still want the experience.
How much time to allow
Three days is the practical minimum to do the loop justice; four is more comfortable. Combined with travel to and from Hanoi, budget at least 4–5 days total — this isn't a trip to squeeze into a short Hanoi stay.
