Quan Thanh Temple
One of Hanoi's "Thang Long Four Sacred Temples," Quan Thanh sits quietly at the southern edge of West Lake — smaller and far less visited than the city's headline sights, which is exactly its appeal.
What it is
Quan Thanh Temple is dedicated to Huyen Thien Tran Vo, a Taoist deity associated with protecting the northern gate of the old citadel. It's one of four temples historically positioned to guard the four directions of ancient Thang Long (Hanoi's former name), making it a genuinely significant site in the city's religious history, even though it draws a fraction of the visitors of Hoan Kiem Lake or the Old Quarter.
What to see
The temple's centrepiece is a striking bronze statue of Tran Vo, cast in the 17th century and standing around four metres tall — an impressive piece of metalwork worth the visit alone. The grounds themselves are calm and shaded, a welcome contrast to the traffic and noise just outside.
Combining it with West Lake
Quan Thanh sits right at the point where West Lake meets the city's central districts, making it an easy add-on to a West Lake walk or cycle, and a short ride from the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex if you're covering Ba Dinh's sights the same day.
