By far the fastest option, at around two hours in the air, with frequent flights operated by several Vietnamese airlines throughout the day. For most visitors on a limited schedule, this is the practical choice — the time saved usually outweighs the lower cost of the alternatives.

The Reunification Express (train)

Vietnam's famous north-south railway line connects the two cities, though covering the full distance takes upwards of a day and a half. Few visitors ride the entire route in one sitting — it's much more commonly used for shorter, scenic legs (Hanoi to Ninh Binh, or Da Nang to Hue, for example) as part of a longer overland itinerary, rather than as a direct Saigon-Hanoi transfer.

Long-distance bus

The cheapest option, with sleeper buses covering the route, but also the longest and least comfortable for a distance this size. Realistically only worth considering if you're specifically after the overland experience and have time to spare, not for anyone trying to save a day.

Our take

Unless overland train travel between shorter stops is specifically part of your trip, flying between Saigon and Hanoi is the sensible default — it frees up time for the cities and regions in between, which is usually a better use of a limited Vietnam itinerary than the transfer itself.
