SIM Cards & Wi-Fi in Hanoi
Vietnam's mobile data is fast and cheap by international standards — getting connected within an hour of landing is genuinely easy.
Getting a local SIM or eSIM
Vietnam's main mobile carriers offer tourist SIM packages with generous data allowances at low prices compared to most Western countries. You can buy a physical SIM at counters inside Noi Bai Airport's arrivals area (slightly pricier but simplest right after landing), or from official carrier stores in the city for a better rate. If your phone supports eSIM, several providers now let you buy and activate a Vietnam data plan online before you even leave home — worth comparing against a physical airport SIM for convenience.
What you'll need
Bring your passport — it's required by law to register a Vietnamese SIM card, and vendors will ask for it. Airport SIM counters and official carrier stores in the city can usually activate a working SIM within a few minutes.
Wi-Fi around the city
Most hotels, hostels and cafes offer free Wi-Fi, generally reliable in the Old Quarter and central areas. That said, a local data SIM is worth having anyway for maps, Grab bookings and translation apps while you're out walking — relying solely on cafe Wi-Fi limits you more than most visitors expect.
