Hanoi with Kids
Hanoi isn't an obvious family destination on paper — the traffic and heat take some adjusting to — but with the right pacing, it works well for families, and kids tend to love the water puppet show and street food more than the parents expect.
What kids tend to enjoy
- Water Puppet Show — short, visual, no language needed, and genuinely different from anything most children will have seen before.
- Train Street — the novelty of a train passing close to houses is a hit with most ages (check current access rules first, see our dedicated guide).
- Vietnam Museum of Ethnology's outdoor park — full-scale traditional houses that kids can actually walk through and explore, more engaging for children than the indoor exhibits alone.
- Street food — spring rolls, rice paper rolls and simple noodle dishes tend to go down well even with more cautious eaters.
Managing traffic and safety
Hanoi's traffic is the single biggest adjustment travelling with children — hold hands firmly when crossing streets and stick to the same slow, steady pace advice as for adults (see our Getting Around guide). A baby carrier works better than a stroller in the Old Quarter, where pavements are often crowded or blocked by parked motorbikes.
Pacing your days
Build in more downtime than you would for an adult-only trip — the heat, noise and sensory intensity of central Hanoi is tiring for children (and honestly, most adults too). Air-conditioned cafe breaks and a slower pace across more days tend to work better than trying to see everything in three tightly packed days.
