Tam Coc
Tam Coc means "three caves" — a reference to the three limestone tunnels your rowboat passes through on a roughly hour-long ride through rice paddies south of Ninh Binh town.
What the boat trip involves
Small rowboats, usually carrying two passengers, are rowed along the Ngo Dong River, passing beneath towering karst cliffs and through three low cave tunnels. Many of the rowers use a distinctive local technique — rowing with their feet — developed for exactly this stretch of shallow, narrow river.
Tam Coc vs Trang An
Tam Coc's boat ride is shorter than Trang An's (roughly an hour versus two and a half), which makes it easier to combine with other stops — like the Mua Cave viewpoint — in a single well-paced day. Trang An's route has more caves and feels slightly more dramatic, but takes longer.
Best time to go
The rice paddies either side of the river change character through the year: vivid green in the spring growing season, golden just before the May–June harvest, and bare (but still scenic) afterward. If the specific look of golden rice fields matters to your trip, time your visit accordingly.
