Mai Chau
Closer to Hanoi than Sapa and far less visited, Mai Chau is a valley of rice paddies and traditional stilt-house villages that works well even as a single overnight — or a long day trip if you're tight on time.
Why choose Mai Chau over Sapa
Mai Chau offers a similar draw to Sapa — terraced rice paddies, ethnic minority villages, a slower pace than the city — but it's roughly half the distance from Hanoi and the terrain is gentler, flat valley floor rather than steep mountain trekking. It's a better fit if your schedule is tight, if you're travelling with less mobile family members, or if you'd simply rather not commit to Sapa's longer overnight journey.
What to do there
- Cycling through the valley — flat, easy routes between villages and rice paddies, suitable for most fitness levels.
- Stilt-house homestays — many visitors stay overnight in a traditional stilt house with a local Thai or Muong family, often including a home-cooked dinner.
- Short, easy treks — gentler than Sapa's mountain trails, good for a half-day walk without needing to be an experienced hiker.
Day trip or overnight?
A very long single day from Hanoi is technically possible, but an overnight homestay is where Mai Chau really delivers — evenings in the valley, away from any city noise, are the main appeal. If you can spare one night, it's worth it.
