Day Trips
Cat Ba Island
Vietnam's largest island, Cat Ba sits right beside Ha Long Bay and offers the same limestone karst scenery from its own bay (Lan Ha Bay) — usually at a lower price and with fewer crowds.

Why choose Cat Ba over Ha Long City
Rather than joining a Ha Long Bay cruise from the mainland, staying on Cat Ba Island puts you right next to Lan Ha Bay — similar limestone karst scenery, generally quieter and with clearer water, and often cheaper boat trips and kayaking than the busier Ha Long Bay tours.
What to do on the island
- Cat Ba National Park — jungle-covered limestone hills with hiking trails, home to the critically endangered Cat Ba langur.
- Cat Co beaches — a cluster of small beaches near Cat Ba town, easy to reach on foot or by taxi.
- Boat trips into Lan Ha Bay — kayaking, swimming stops, and floating fishing villages, with far fewer boats than Ha Long Bay proper.
Getting there from Hanoi
The most common route combines a road transfer with a ferry or high-speed boat crossing — bookable as a single through-ticket from most travel agents and hotels in Hanoi, taking roughly 3.5–4 hours door to door.
Good to know: Cat Ba works well as an overnight or multi-night base if you want to explore the karst bay area at a slower pace than a standard Ha Long Bay day tour allows.
