Getting from Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi

First: make sure you are at the right terminal

Noi Bai uses T1 for domestic flights and T2 for international flights. If you need to move between them, the airport operates a free public-area shuttle. Current airport guidance lists service from early morning until after midnight, with roughly 15–20 minute frequency through much of the day. At T1 the stop is on Level 1 at Hall A; at T2 it is on Level 1, Lane 2, around columns 11–12.

Which airport transfer is best?

• Grab or another app-based car: easiest for many independent travellers with data and manageable luggage.
• Official taxi: good when you want to leave immediately without setting up an app.
• Bus 86: excellent-value public transport if a central stop works for you.
• Other public buses: useful for specific districts but slower to understand after a long flight.
• Pre-booked private transfer: best for families, groups, late arrivals or anyone who values a named pickup.

Bus 86: the easiest public-transport option for many visitors

Noi Bai Airport's current transport information lists Route 86 between the airport and Hanoi Railway Station at 50,000 VND per trip, with service running approximately from 07:00 until around 22:00. It is a straightforward choice for central Hanoi if you are travelling light and do not mind completing the last part of the journey on foot or by a short taxi/ride-hailing trip.

Do not assume the railway-station terminus is beside every Old Quarter hotel. Check your accommodation on a map before choosing the bus, and allow extra time at peak traffic periods.

Other official public buses

The airport currently lists several cheaper city routes, including services towards Cau Giay, Kim Ma, Long Bien, My Dinh, Ha Dong and Ocean Park. Fares on these routes are lower than Bus 86, but the best route depends heavily on where you are staying. For a first visit, saving a small amount is rarely worth taking a bus to the wrong side of the city.

Grab and app-based cars

Ride-hailing is convenient because the app shows the trip and estimated fare before you travel. Set up the app and payment method before departure if possible, connect to airport Wi-Fi or local data after arrival, then follow the app's current pickup instructions rather than accepting unsolicited offers inside arrivals. Confirm the vehicle registration before getting in.

Official airport taxis

Use the signed taxi area and a clearly identified vehicle. Ignore people roaming arrivals who claim to be your taxi unless you have a pre-arranged booking with identifying details. Smartraveller specifically recommends metered or pre-booked taxis in Vietnam, especially at airports. If anything about the vehicle or fare arrangement feels wrong, return to the official area rather than arguing after departure.

Private transfer

A pre-booked transfer costs more than public transport but removes most arrival friction. It is particularly useful if you land late, have children, carry bulky luggage, travel as a group or have an address that is difficult to explain. Ask the provider where the driver will meet you and what happens if immigration or baggage collection takes longer than expected.

How long will the trip take?

Road time is commonly around 45–60 minutes to central areas, but Hanoi traffic is variable enough that this should be treated as a planning range, not a promise. Rain, peak-hour congestion and incidents can add time. For the return to the airport, leave a generous buffer rather than working backwards from a best-case drive.

Late-night arrivals

If you arrive after the useful bus window, an app-based car, official taxi or pre-booked transfer is normally the practical answer. Arrange mobile data before leaving the terminal and have the hotel name and address saved offline. If your accommodation has a 24-hour desk, send your flight number and expected arrival time in advance.

Paying and avoiding arrival scams

Use the app price, official taxi arrangement or a confirmed private-transfer price. Be wary of unsolicited drivers, claims that your chosen service “is not available,” or pressure to change vehicles. Keep your phone and bags under control in pickup areas and do not hand your phone to a stranger to “fix” a booking.

What if your flight arrives at the wrong terminal for a connection?

For a domestic/international transfer you may need to change between T1 and T2. The airport's free shuttle is the correct public connection. Build enough connection time for immigration, baggage procedures when applicable, the shuttle itself and another check-in/security process; do not treat the terminals as one continuous building.
